White Truffle Popcorn

I cooked up a storm last week and I have a lot of yummy recipes coming, but in the meantime, I wanted to post this quick snack that I made the other day.

I love popcorn and came up with this recipe after reading about a few truffle butter recipes online. Everything is better with a bit of white truffle oil – and popcorn is no exception!

White Truffle Popcorn - Vegan and Gluten-Free

By the way, if you normally eat microwave popcorn, you should read-up on the toxic chemicals that are used the coat the bags. As you can see below, it’s super easy it is to make popcorn at home on the stove – or better yet with an air popper (no fat). At pennies a bowl, it will save you a lot of money too!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/3 cup corn kernels
  • 1 tablespoon margarine (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons white truffle oil
  • salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Add the 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil to a large pot with a lid. Heat at medium high heat until the oil is watery and coats the entire base of the pot.
  2. Add the corn kernels and cover the pot with the lid. Shake the pot every 5-10 seconds, so that the kernels do not burn. You’ll begin to hear them popping – remove pot from heat when the popping slows down.
  3. Let the pot rest about 30 seconds before removing the lid, as some kernels may still pop.
  4. If using margarine, heat it in a small bowl in the microwave for 30 seconds, or until melted.
  5. Add the truffle oil to the margarine and mix together. Pour mixture onto the popcorn and shake it for even distribution. Season with salt and serve.

  1. I use a microwave corn popper without oil or salt & enjoy it fine. I will, tho, try my nutritional yeast on it next time. I used to have an air popper which did a good job also.

  2. I have some black truffle oil that I use in mushroom risotto, not sure about the difference in flavour. Would this work in popcorn do you think? Sounds delish.

  3. Where would I find White Truffle Oil? And one can make their own microwave popcorn using a lunch bag size brown paper bag, add the popcorn, a bit of earth balance vegan butter or oil of choice, fold flaps over (can even staple it, supposedly the staples will NOT catch on fire or heat up in the microwave). Place on popcorn setting till popping sounds slow. Voila! I would rather just make stove top popcorn, personally.

    • Hi Michelle – Thanks for the microwaving tip, I’ll try that. My truffle oil was a gift but you should be able to find it at any specialty/gourmet food shop…

    • Hi Kate – You’re totally right. I’ve been trying to use other oils instead (such as coconut oil), but I haven’t tried it yet for this recipe. I’ll update this post as soon as I do!

  5. Great idea! I’ve been happily popping corn on the stove for a few years, but have never thought to flavour it with white truffle oil, which I have a small bottle of.

  6. Just googled it to be sure but all Orville Redenbacher and Actll popcorn brands discontinued using diacetyl as a butter flavour in their popcorn products in October 2007 (the link you provide is an article on popcorn lung from 2007). But better to be safe than sorry….thanks for the recipe…sounds deelish!
