I’m Back, Baby!

Oh my goodness you guys, I totally dropped the ball this week! I felt like such a Vegan MoFo rockstar last week – making the roundup not just once, but twice, and managing to post something everyday. I was even all caught-up with the my RSS reader, but now it’s back at over 1,000 unread items again!

(Cue: weepy violin music)

You see, Sunday was another beach day (not that I’m complaining!) followed by a birthday get-together for a friend. I was exhausted (and slightly tipsy) by the time I got home and was too tired to post anything. Then on Monday, I got hit with a wave of work and have been trying to keep my head above the water ever since. Last night, for example, I had a conference call at midnight (I live in Sydney but work for a Canadian company), then I had to launch our monthly eNewsletter, work on a report for a couple hours, and sleep for 2 hours before getting back up at 7am for another conference call. I feel jet-lagged but the only travel I’ve been doing is going from my bed to my kitchen to my living room!

Anyway, I won’t make any more excuses, but I want to try and make up for it. I’ve got a few posts that I really want to get out before the month ends so I’m going be a bit crazy here and commit to getting two posts out each day for the rest of the month. I’m in awe of those of you who’ve managed to post something everyday this month, and while this won’t make me anywhere near as awesome, it’s my way of feeling as though I’ve contributed as much as I could.

So having said all that, I’m feeling super guilty now because just before I went incognito this week, I was honored with a Liebster Blog Award from Heather @ Better with Veggies. I started following a few new people based on these awards going around this month, and it’s just such a cool way to spread the word about awesome vegan blogs!

Liebster Blog Award

Liebster” is German for ‘dearest’ or ‘beloved’ or even ‘favorite’. The goal of the award is to bring attention to bloggers who have fewer than 200 followers. The rules of winning the award are as follows:

  1. Show your thanks to those who gave you the award by linking back to them.
  2. Reveal 5 of your top picks and let them know they’ve been nominated by leaving a comment on their blog.
  3. Post the award on your blog.
  4. Enjoy the love and support of some wonderful people all over the world!

NOTE: Now, I feel a kind of weird because I’m not sure how many “real” followers I have. I mean, I have just over 130 subscribers via WordPress, but then I have 376 people following my Facebook page. I have 1,371 Twitter followers but I know that a large chunk of those don’t actively read my blog. Hopefully we haven’t upset the Liebster police :)

As for Heather’s blog, Better with Veggies, I discovered it this month and have since added it to my RSS reader so that I can keep in touch with her going forward. I like that she tests-out all sorts of vegan recipes that she comes across, and also veganizes a few of her own. That’s my style too so maybe I’m a bit biased! Here are some of my favorite posts of hers:

Like Heather, I’m unable to tell how many subscribers other blogs have – but here’s how I chose my award-winners:

  • Blogs that I discovered during this Vegan Mofo
  • Blogs that I didn’t think had already been chosen for a Liebster award

So, in no particular order, here are my 5 choices:

Baby Ruth Fork and Beans – It’s hard to believe that Cara has only been running this blog since August. Her writing is witty/funny, her photos are stunning… and those vegan candy bar recipes?! I’ve bookmarked too many to list them all here, but I’m predicting (hoping?!) that by this time next year, she’ll be the CEO of a major vegan candy company!
Pineapple Basil Slush Crafty Earth Mama – It may or may not already have 200 followers but I’m nominating this blog because I’ve already bookmarked a few of its recipes, including the Pineapple Basil Slush and Pina Colada Popsicles. Also, since I’m sometimes a bit of a klutz in the kitchen, I think the Bruise and Burn Salve will come in handy at some point!
Take Away Truffles Vegan Culinary Crusade – What can I say – I’m a sucker for great photography. But really, it’s the food here that keeps me coming back. Both quick and healthy, the Take Away Truffles and Coconut Lime Cheesecake are exactly my kind of recipes. Oh, and the raw caramel chips look absolutely amazing!
Sweet Potatoes au Gratin Dine Well – I love the variety of recipes on this blog! I’m probably the last vegan on earth who’s never prepared Tempeh, but I don’t have any more excuses thanks to this post on How to Cook Tempeh. Those Sweet Potatoes au Gratin look divine, as does the Cashew Cheese and Caramel Sauce. Yum indeed!
West Philly Vegan – It was the Pot Stickers that originally drew me to this blog, but since then, I’ve also bookmarked the pumpkin spinach quiche and Spiced Chickpea Crackers. No surprise for me, this has quickly become another favorite for its varied recipes and great photos.

And here I was, worrying that you were attacked my a great white at the beach, thus the reason for your absence, you lush! This is disturbing to me and you will never do such a thing again. <–I'm sleep deprived and I tend to get bossy when I am… Okay, now for the serious stuff. A big "AW SHUCKS, Angela!" is owed to you. For reals. I'm so honored that you would nominate me for this! And I almost choked on my water, reading about the CEO part. Funny! Well, if I am a candy maker by next year, I will have to name a candy bar after you :) Thank you again! xoxo, Cara

Hey, it wasn’t all beaching and drinking! There was some serious work going on too! But yeah, it’s great to be back and feverishly cookin’ and bloggin’!

You so totally deserve the nomination! I haven’t made anything yet but you know I’ll let you know when I do. “The Vegangela Bar”… I like the sound of that, Ms. CEO :)

  2. I’m so glad you’re enjoying my blog too – that buffalo chik’n dip is addicting and I may have added the leftovers to the top of my shepherd’s pie last night (which really shouldn’t go together – but tasted delicious!). :) I’m going to check out some the blogs you nominated now, I haven’t seen a few of them yet. Have a great weekend!
