Almost Raw Cookie Dough Balls

I’ve been making my Healthy Breakfast Cookies every week since moving into our new apartment. They’re healthy little bites of goodness – the perfect little snack to pack up when we’re on the go. But I’ve been using chocolate chips instead of raisins lately, and that little tweak inspired me to modify my Almost Raw Coconut + Apricot Oat Balls by using chocolate chips instead of dried apricots. And these Almost Raw Cookie Dough Balls were born.

They’re rich and sweet, but healthy enough that you can enjoy a couple without feeling too guilty.

And as long as you’ve got a ripe banana, these come together with pantry staples!

Because most commercially-purchased oats are steamed as part of the processing process, this can’t be considered a 100% raw recipe. But if you use raw agave, a vanilla bean and raw chocolate chips, then it would come pretty close.

Regardless, this is a no-cook recipe that gets a sweet treat in your belly in no time.

…It’s really more like 12 because any normal person will sample a generous portion of the batter before it gets rolled into balls. Go ahead. Your secret is safe with me.

Note that the coconut oil helps to hold these babies together, so you need to store them in the fridge so they don’t go all gooey on you

  2. These look so yummy! I must try!
You can probably boost the nutritional value further by using cacao nibs instead of chocolate chips…what do you think?
    Thank you!

  3. Very nice! Made them yesterday for the first time. Half the dough I added raw cacao powder and some more maple syrup to (and left out the chocolate chips), that was tasty, too! Thanks for this recipe!

  4. Made these today, day after Christmas. I was done with the sugar overload over the past month and getting a head start on the new year. I pulsed the oats for way too long, so they were much more soft opposed to a little chunky, which I would have liked. All user error here. Love them though, and will keep making them. Have them in the freezer now to get a little texture to them. I’m also not vegan, but I chopped up a bar of Alter Eco dark chocolate with crispy quinoa, so that will help give it some crunch. Thanks again for the great recipes.

  5. My Daughter & I whizzed these up tonight in the food processor. We dusted them with raw cacao powder. Was a long hour waiting for them. Yummo they are sensational.

  6. After making your lovely apricot almost-raw cookies, I just had to try this recipe. I ran out of bananas…so I used a small tub of vegan cream cheese in the place of the banana. Also, I used almond meal instead of oats. Heaven! These came out somewhere in between cheesecake and an Almond Joy bar!

  7. I made these last night and loved them! I think I’m going to make another batch and add almond extract. I love that stuff and it makes everything taste like cake, in my opinion. Just wanted to share in case anyone else’s wanted to try.

  8. These are so good! Mine ended up much gooier/less chunky since my food processor is about the size of a walnut so it was having a hard…processing it. So by the time everything was mixed some of it was practically dough. But still delicious. Actually it makes me think I might be able to reduce the oil and still have it work with the finer texture. Also I subbed local honey for the syrup, it’s what I had and, well, I’m not vegan. And I can probably reduce that a smidge too since they were plenty sweet!

  10. Just made them! They turned out great! Except, instead of chocolate chips (because my roommates and I finished them all! oops!) I substituted dried cranberries and to make it chocolatey I mixed in cocoa powder. They are delicious! Thanks for the recipe!

  11. I made these tonight for my husband for Valentines Day. He always eats my cookie dough when I’m making chocolate chip cookies and since we are trying to eat healthier, I thought he’d enjoy these. Well, we ate half the batch tonight. They are delicious! Next time I’ll add some chopped walnuts too!

  12. I made these last night and they were mindblowingly good. Do you think they’d taste as good with only 1 tbsp coconut oil, and 1 tbsp of unsweetened apple sauce to make up?

    Reply
    • So glad you liked them! The coconut oil is what keeps them together because it hardens in the fridge. I wouldn’t add apple sauce because it will make them too soft. Try with just 1 tbsp of coconut oil and see if they firm up in the fridge. They probably will 🙂

  13. Hey good idea.. maybe if i eat a bunch of these in a day my metabolism will go on overdrive and i will lose weight.. lol…. i guess i would be willing to test that hypothesis… but may not like the results in my waistline… all in moderation, right?? Eat what you love, in small portions. Diets rarely work because we deprive ourselves of things we crave/love… 🙂 That is why I count calories because I can eat whatever I want, but I just gotta count it!!! Ah to be a size 4 like I was in high school where I could eat whatever I wanted and never had to think about calories!!!!

    • Yes! Couldn’t agree more! Normally, just a sweet bite of something every other day or so is enough for me. I just went a little crazy with these. Let’s hope that metabolism thing kicks in. I’ll let you know… Ha ha!

  14. OMG Angela, you are not kidding me, i’m on my fifth ball and i’m on a diet.. so the counting calorie thing is out the window with these babies in my house. No way these things are gonna last for even a couple of days when the kids get home!! My hubby tried one and he is now going in for a second one as I type this… seriously good stuff!!!! My hubby said they taste like a candy bar.. i think they are the best thing ever… i am guessing i probably should not make these when i’m on a diet next time because they are so delish that it takes all of my strength not to go in for another one… lol!!!

    • Right?! Well at least they’re pretty healthy. No gluten, no refined sugar. A bit of fat from the coconut oil, but they say that’s actually good for you and actually helps to speed-up your metabolism. I hope it’s true. Ha ha!

Glad to hear they’re hit with your hubby too. I had my fiance taste-test one and his reply was “you can make these anytime”, so that’s always a good thing 🙂

  15. I made these today and they are awesome:) Wondering how long they will keep in refrigerator, or maybe i should freeze. I am on a diet so counting calories and did the math and it came up to about 107 calories per ball.. totally worth it when you taste these:) I am vegetarian not vegan so i did count regular fair trade choco chips, not vegan style so maybe they are less with vegan chips… LOVE these. As I started making these part of me wondered what would happen if you baked them into a cookie?? They do have coco oil in there so i bet it may work?? just a thought i was toying around with!!! I LOVE your site.. I also tried your coconut curry lentil soup and it was to die for. i will comment on that recipe too!!!

    • Well here’s the problem… I ate the entire batch. All to myself. Over 2 days. So I’m not really sure how long they will keep. But I figure they’ll be fine for a week (if yours manage to last that long!)

You know, my mom asked me the same thing about baking them. I suspect it would work quite well. Have you tried my Healthy Breakfast Cookies yet? They’re a similar idea, but you do cook them > https://vegangela.com/2010/11/22/healthy-peanut-butter-oatmeal-cookie/

Thanks for all the kind words about my site. Getting great feedback like yours makes me so happy and pushes me to get more recipes out 🙂
